Avignonesi Grifi Toscana 2021
Avignonesi Grifi Toscana 2021
Red Blend from Montepulciano, Tuscany, Italy
Winemaker Notes
For Avignonesi, Grifi is a historic wine, recently reborn. The Grifi was produced between 1983 and 1996, exploring the innate capacity of the Sangiovese grape for welcoming other varieties into the blend. Production was stopped in 1996, as Avignonesi at the time wished to use all its Sangiovese grapes for the production of Nobile. However, like the mythical griffin, the legend of this wine continued, and with the arrival of Avignonesi’s new owner Virginie Saverys, Grifi was brought back to life.
The blending of two such different personalities as Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon come together to give this wine its unique character. Dark ruby red in colour with purple hues. The nose opens with hints of blueberries, blackberries and incense, moving on to graphite and vanilla nuances. In the mouth it is dense, broad and complex with hints of plum and blueberry. It then evolves into a balsamic and spicy explosion supported by good acidity. The lively tannin on the whole palate accompanies the savoury and persistent finish.
Food Pairing
Pairs well with grilled and braised meats and tomato-sauced pasta dishes.
